Southern Cross Care's Riverpoint Retirement Estate Community Centre has been recognised for its innovative and creative design by receiving an industry award for excellence in Retirement Living Design from Aged & Community Services SA & NT.
The Awards honours and recognise excellence in the delivery of aged and community care services and the Retirement Living Design was a new category in this year's awards.
"A lot of work had gone into the design of Riverpoint's community centre so we were delighted to receive this award," comments David Moran, Deputy CEO, Southern Cross Care (SA & NT) Inc. "We liaised closely with residents groups to ensure the selection of entertainment equipment, joinery, and landscaping met their preferences.
“The result is not only a comfortable and functional building, but a beautiful and dynamic space for the residents to meet, socialise, learn together and connect as a community."
The building form, with its upswept ‘butterfly’ pitched roofs and high windows, admits abundant natural light throughout the year. The wide sheltered verandahs (with heating for the colder months) provide outdoor seating, barbeque and relaxation areas. Inside there is a wide variety of comfortable meeting spaces, from intimate rooms for quiet conversation to spacious lounge, activity and exercise areas. Inner walls can be moved to create different sized rooms according to a function’s needs.
"The design of a building plays a big role in creating an environment where people can live in a place they call home," adds David. "Our aim is to establish a strong sense of community that responds to the regional area, while providing individual, high quality accommodation, services and support to seniors in our society.”
The award was presented at a formal dinner at Crowne Plaza, Adelaide. In addition to the new Retirement Living Design award category, a new award for Health & Wellbeing was also introduced this year.
