Begin with your sense of self - Jennifer Brock

Thursday, January 14, 2016

After years of caring for others, it takes a strong sense of self to realise it’s time to care for yourself; to find the right place to settle in for the later years.

Jennifer Brock knew what she was looking for as she had worked in the aged care industry or caring roles for her entire life. She claims to “have seen it all” as she started out as a nurse assistant and progressed her career into roles which included agency work across a variety of facilities, right through to managing residential and retirement villages until her early retirement in her 50’s.

Jennifer had lived quietly and independently for a number of years as a widow and needed a secure location from where she could still visit her mother in the Riverland frequently. She loved the purpose built design of the homes and felt a sense of ease in the environment where she thought she would be just as comfortable being social, as when she wanted to feel at peace. She admits she has been one tenth of the carer to herself as she has been to others but she openly smiles when she talks about the heartfelt welcome she has received in joining the Riverpoint Retirement community. She has felt an instant connection with others and she has enjoyed being helped from the simple things like contact details for tradesmen, through to joining in the social activities.

Her Monday afternoons had never been so much fun, however with the start up of afternoon and indoor carpet bowls, she is welcome of the change. After working hard all her life, she knows life is about people and you can either feel supported by them, or not.

Her career gave her the perspective that older people have great strength; they are more willing to work at it, more willing to make a home life for their family by putting their children first and more willing to use their instincts. She praises her mother for being able to “make something out of nothing and simply picking up the pieces wherever they, as a family, went together”.
